In 1977, he received his license as a Registered Mechanical Engineer, and he started his engineering career as an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Adamson University.
In 1981, he came to Charlotte, and continues to practice in the field of engineering. He was awarded two US Patents for the valve and refrigeration industry.
In 1986, after taking the GMAT for his MBA degree, he was accepted at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
In 1988, he started his involvement with the FACC. He was one of the original authors of the constitution and by-laws. He was involved in different fund-raising, civic, community, humanitarian and sports activities.
Bert has been married to Maria Zenaida Alejo (Nini) since October, 1989. They have a son, Bernardt, who is now sophomore at UNCC.
